Superhuman

“Superhuman effort isn't worth a damn unless it achieves results.”

—Ernest
Shackleton, 1916

Respond to the quote above.  What do you think it means? Do you agree or disagree and why?  Who was Ernest Shackleton- what qualifies him to make this statement?
Also, connect with the quote (text to self, text to text, or text to world)- how does the sentiment of the quote still resonate today?

  3. I believe its true but who is he and I to make a statement or anybody else if you make an effort it is at least worth it. You don't try to the best of your abilities and at the end say it wasn't worth the try or i give up if you're close to your accomplishment. I don't think it is completely true if you come out of the situation you at least learn something. And he’s probably talking about his experience as an explorer so for him if he doesn't accomplish something it was a waste of time.

  4. Ernest Shackleton was an Anglo-Irish explorer. He was involved in four British expeditions and he had lead three of them. I think that he was trying to say that it doesn’t matter how hard you try if you don’t accomplish anything. I disagree because you did try and just because you didn’t have a huge accomplishment doesn’t mean that it wasn’t important. You did try and you can try again but if you believe this, you’ll give up and never accomplish anything. You should always keep trying and never give up. If you give up, the only thing you’ve accomplished is failure. You can’t fail if you’ve tried. You can only fail if you stop trying. So that is why I disagree with this quote. However he is qualified to make his statement because he did in fact work on a big expedition and I do not believe he accomplished anything great. But that doesn't mean that it means nothing. He got his own wikipedia page and he is on the internet. It doesn't mean anything to fail at first. Sorry Shackleton, but I don’t think accomplishing something makes you great. I think trying your best makes you great. So don’t stop trying. You can learn to try better next time because you’ve learned what helped and what slowed you down. So, as long as you learn from it, it doesn’t matter if you achieve results or not.

  5. I think this quote is trying to tell its readers that if you put your blood & sweat in your work and you don’t get the results that you want then, your work was all for no reason and you wasted your precious time. In my point of view I think that this quote is sending the wrong message to its readers. Thats because some people have some tasks to finish and sometimes they know that its impossible for them to do it. So, to see someone famous make a quote like that i mean he could be a role model for some people and, for people to read this they could just not even try on some things and who knows that some thing could’ve been a really great opportunity. Ernest Shackleton was an Irish British explorer that was a figure of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. The message of this quote is still seen in this era. Its mostly seen in people who don’t try and aren’t successful because, putting hard work into something and not getting results could feel like your wasting your time but your time but, you learn a ton on new things because not everyone will know everything.

I agreed with the quote because like you said, since he's famous, people would listen to him, but since you said that I feel like the quote is kind of wrong. 6. To me this quote means that it doesn't matter if you try harder than you can. If you don't achieve the goal that you were trying to reach, your effort was useless. I agree because why would you try your hardest and go out not doing what you were aiming to do? Earnest Shackleton was an explorer who led three expeditions. He and his companions set a new record and for their achievements, he was knighted by the king when he returned. He then went on an expedition called the Trans-Antarctic Expedition. A storm struck their boat but they got out of it safely on an island. Shackleton returned to the Antarctic but died from a heart attack. The fact that he worked hard and had all these amazing achievements qualifies him to say this. He led expeditions and was even knighted, but he died in debt. He tried to get rich and secured and he started a business but he failed it. After his death, he was forgotten while his rival was widely known remembered for many years. He put a lot of effort into his work but died without achieving his main goals.

Like, if you try to become a singer or musician, if you keep trying for ten years, and you don't get anywhere, that would be a sign that you're not very successful. I wouldn't use the word failure or meaningless, but I don't think that in that situation, there's no such thing as all effort should be congratulated. Truthfully, a lot of people probably don't care whether people try or not.

  7. What i think the quote by Ernest Shackleton means is you can try your hardest but if it doesn't achieve anything then you just wasted your time and energy. I also think it means that a lot of people think if you try your best you will succeed but that is not always true. I strongly agree because Ernest Shackleton is right, all of our lives we have been told that if you try you best and give it a 110% then you will succeed but that is not always true. Ernest Shackleton was an explorer and a writer this qualifies him because he has probably experienced himself giving his best with exploring and book writing but not getting the result he wanted. It also qualifies with him because he has probably tried so hard to find a fossil or something else but he never did. And that is what i think about Ernest Shackleton quote, “Superhuman effort isn't worth a damn unless it achieves results.”

  8. I think this quote is saying that giving your best it worthless unless you get something out of it. I agree with this, when you give your best at something, and it’s not enough, if you’re smart enough you learn from it, and your best becomes better. You get something out of it, you get information, wisdom, and sometimes moral. However, if you don’t learn from it, then it was worthless, it would be the equivalent of not doing anything at all, you could have just stood there, and not do anything, and you would have the same results. But if you do learn from it, then it was useful.
Ernest Shackleton was an Anglo-Irish explorer who participated in four explorations to the antarctic, three of which he led. On his first expedition he broke a record for traveling 82 degrees S, and on his second he broke that record again for traveling 88 degrees S. He is qualified to say this because on his first journey he traveled very far, and then on his second, got even further, he learned from his past, and his best became better, and he learned how to go even further. That’s essentially what this quote is saying, to learn from your past, and better yourself to become even better at things.

  9. Ernest Shackleton was the first expedition during 1901-1904. I think this quote means that if you put effort into something and tried really really hard and what you wanted to achieve isn’t your outcome then it wasn’t worth it and you failed. I do agree with this quote because if you failed and also didn’t learn anything from what you did then you didn’t achieve anything at all. What qualifies him to make this statement was that he was an Anglo-Irish explorer who experienced a lot and made a difference in the world during this time. The quote resonates today by it still meaning the same thing. Still if you don’t achieve anything and don’t learn from your mistake then you did fail.

  10. I believe this quote means that if you try really hard to achieve something and you don’t reach that goal, the effort you made is worthless. I disagree with this quote. I feel that if a person tries to accomplish something, they should be proud that they at least tried to do something. Ernest Shackleton was an explorer who took part in four expeditions to the Antarctic. He held the record of Farthest South latitude. In general, he was a successful adventurer who reached his goal when he put all his effort to it. 11. I agree with him because if you put tons of effort on something but it doesn’t make a difference on anything then it all the effort would be for nothing. Making a difference is why you put so much effort so not making a difference would defeat the whole purpose. I think that he has the right to say that because he kind of went through that through his life. He was an explorer through his life and went on many expeditions but even though he did that his life was very unfulfilled and he wasn't very satisfied. I think this goes along with the quote because even though he put on this effort on having a great life by going on these expeditions it still didn’t make a change on how his life turned out. It’s like if I do all of my homework and spend so much time on it but I never turn it in then it wouldn't even matter that I did all of the work. It resonates today because with everything, if you don’t change anything then the effort and time you put in it would be all for nothing. So pretty much what he is saying is that if you’re going to spend so much time on something make sure that it’s actually going to make a difference or don’t do it at all. -Seth Peraza Per.5

My response to this quote will give my point of view of this quote, if i agree with it, a way that i connect to it and what qualifies him to make this statement. It will also state how the quote resonates today. I believe that this quote is saying that even with all of your greatest effort there’s no point to what you’re doing with them if it does not show results. I agree with this quote because there’s no sense or meaning to give 110% if it gets you nowhere or doesn’t make a difference. Making an expeditions to and through the Antarctic requires a lot of energy and determination. In this case he could have said this because through these conditions if you do not give all you have you will not make it to the South Pole, which he did not reach. This connects to me playing sports because you always have to give your best effort if you want to stay in the game which is the result for doing what is humanly possible, well for me personally at least. 22. Ernest Shackleton was a British explorer born on February 15,1874 in Ireland. He was in an expedition to explore the Antarctic. He didn't stay for the whole expedition because his health was worsening. Later he led the Trans-Antarctic Expedition. His ship, The Endurance was crushed by ice. Him and his crew were now hanging onto ice sheets until they reached Elephant Island. His crew was rescued by him and they all survived.
To me the quote means that your effort isn't worth anything unless you can actually accomplish something. It means that even though you try your best to accomplish something it doesn't do anything unless something is actually accomplished.
I agree with the quote because many people tell others that the outcome doesn't matter as long as they put effort into it. In some cases that is true because it won’t affect you later in life but other times it does matter. Some things are different and your effort won’t matter if you didn't accomplish anything. It could be job that you are applying for and you put all your effort into getting that job and if you end up not getting the job, then you are usually saddened and you just give up. Others usually never mention you either if you didn't accomplish anything and they never mention your efforts.
The only reason that would make me disagree with the quote is that anyone can learn anything from failing. Someone might find out that they don’t like something even if they put all their effort into something or if they want to try again they can fix their mistakes for the next time. I still agree with the quote unless we say that you can't learn anything from mistakes made.
I think that Ernest was qualified to say this because he put all of his effort into exploring and it didn't matter in the end because he never ended up accomplishing anything. After he died it’s almost certain that nobody mentioned anything about how much effort he put put into his expeditions.
I can see how some people can relate to this quote and some of those people that helped make our country better would have related to this if they didn't’ accomplish anything. One example would be with Martin Luther King Jr., he put all of his effort into ending segregation. He is still remembered today because of what he did. His efforts helped him accomplish his goal. Most of our country doesn't care about race anymore and we are united than we were before. If he hadn't accomplished anything he probably wouldn't be remembered by anyone. Nobody would remember his efforts and he would just be remembered as someone who tried but didn't actually do anything.
My overall opinion is that this quote is correct and that the only time your effort is worth something is when you accomplish something.

Ernest Shackleton was an Irish explorer. He went to the Antarctic and also was a marine. He tried to join parliament but when that didn't work out he went into journalism. He tried so many times to achieve his goals but they were never achieved. This is what makes him qualified to make this statement because he had to learn the hard way that even with effort you won't always get the results you want.

I disagree with this quote because if you put effort into something and try your best you have achieve something no matter if it was a good or bad achievement. Ernest Shackleton is an Anglo-Irish explorer. He was in four British expedition which he lead three of them. So he is trying to relate to his success or failure in those expedition. Therefore I believe that if you put effort into something it is an achievement.

  29. I think Ernest Shackleton is saying that even if you put effort in something, but don’t achieve anything all of your effort doesn’t matter. I disagree with this quote, because doing the best you can makes you successful. And if you put a lot of effort in something, you will be able to get that thing. If you don’t put effort in anything, you will be a failure. Ernest Shackleton was anglo-Irish explorer who participated in four British expeditions to the Antarctic, of which he led three. During the first expedition 1901–1904, he and his companions Scott and Wilson set a new southern record by marching to latitude 82°S. You do your best because you know that you’re going to get something out of it, if you don’t achieve anything at least you did your best. Even today people who do their best they get what they want in life.

  30. I think Ernest Shackleton was trying to convey that if you don't try your best to reach your goals, then it's pointless. I agree with this quote because You're gonna grow up and look back at how you could have achieved your goals better and tried harder. To me I think if I don’t try my best in a goal that I set then it wasn’t even a goal if it was easy to achieve. Ernest Shackleton is an explorer who participated in 4 expeditions and led 3 of the 4.He qualifies to say that statement because he achieved many life goals that were hard-working. He is also trying to relate to what he had experienced in his expeditions. If you set a goal and it’s your main goal you’re trying to achieve you’ll want to work your butt off to achieve the goal like how he did when he set off to cross the antarctic from one side to the other. If you don’t try your best or put in work to make it feel like you worked hard to achieve the goal, then its needless to call it a goal.

Even if you put everything you have into one thing and devote all your time to it, it doesn’t matter because you weren’t successful in whatever it was you were striving for. I strongly disagree with what Shackelton has to say because personally, I believe that if you try your best and put your best foot forward, that’s all that really matters. Whether you succeed or not. Ernest Shackleton was a British explorer who joined an expedition to the Antarctic. Different people approach this quote in different ways. Some people beat themselves up over not achieving what they were striving so hard for, but there are others who just brush it off and move on to a completely different goal they’re willing to conquer. He probably didn’t get to achieve many of his goals before he passed away.

  32. I think this quote means that if you try your best on something and do not get a positive result then it would be worthless. I agree with this quote because everyone has goals in their lives, but when you try your best to achieve it and you get a negative result then it would be a worth of your time. The reason why most people give up is because of trying and not achieving your goals. This happens to every person in life and it is very normal but the idea is when your trying your hardest and get nothing out of your work then its nothing. Ernest Shackleton was a british explorer who joined and expedition to the Antarctic. Shackleton has probably not achieved many of his goals that he has worked his hardest on, and thats the reason why he made this quote. Many people get what they want without doing anything and it really happens because maybe they are rich and the things they want to achieve is something that is worth money, but other people have other goals. For instance, poor people that are sick have no other choice then hoping for luck or dying with fear. They have no money to buy medicine or do a surgery. These are some examples of trying your best and not achieving your
goals. Moreover, it is hard to spend all your time on something you really want and not attain your goal. Sometimes I even give up but then I realize that its not the end of the world so I keep moving up and never stop.

  34. I disagree with this quote. Many of the responses I have seen thus far have stated that they agree. I have no problem with an opposing view to this quote. I feel that some people don't exactly understand what he means. Honestly none of us could possibly know exactly what he means since he's not here to explain himself. The way I see it, just because you don't achieve your goal doesn't mean all of your efforts were in vain. If you honestly thought you couldn't achieve your goal, you wouldn't have started in the first place. You only go for it, if you strongly feel that you can reach your goal. Take Columbus for example, his mission was to find a route to India. Did he find one? No. But did what he did find prove to be useful? Yes. He may not have found a passage to India, but even though he didn't know it yet, he found new land which we now call home.

That raises another point, you may feel that you have completely failed and it wasn't worth it, but someone else may catch on to something useful to their goal. If it is of some benefit or helps you get further than when you started, your efforts aren't in vain and useless at all.

From what I hear, this man was an explorer. With all that they did, it at times may have been discouraging when they didn't find what they were looking for. When this was stated he could've been mad at himself or at the situation and decided that even though he tried, it really wasn't worth it.

This will apply forever and ever because people will always have goals. Always. Humans had goals in past and they will have goals in the future.

  38. I believe that this quote by Ernest Shackleton is stating that no matter what you do such as practice something or study something, the only thing that matters is the ending result.I do agree with this quote because i can apply it to my everyday life. For example, many teachers say that it doesn’t matter how much you try, but on the final grade that you achieve. So, even if you know how to do something but you do not know how to apply it to be successful it is worthless.I could also connect with this quote with basketball because what good is it to do something great during practice and not be able to do it during a game when it matters. What qualifies Ernest Shackleton to make this statement is his achievements in life. Shackleton was an Anglo-Irish which went on four british expeditions and successfully led three of those expeditions. Ernest Shackleton shows through his achievements that his utilized his efforts and studies, which implies that he did something and made it worth an achievement.

I think it says that you can try your hardest to achieve anything but, unless you're able to achieve it, it doesn’t mean anything. Such as you put in all your effort for nothing. The reason I say I go through it is because everyday at school I do try to do my best and pass the class but when the test comes, I just can’t prove it to the teacher. Ernest Shackleton was an explorer who traveled across the lands and seas. I feel that since he did those things, he is qualified to say this quote because what he did is a big achievement. He can brag to everyone and let them know how he led the group and were able to get there. However, if the situation was that he tried to make and couldn’t make it, people wouldn’t respect him. 40. I believe this quote means that when someone puts forth more effort than usual, there should be results. If there isn’t results then this “superhuman” effort is useless. A superhuman effort is extreme effort and what would be the point of using this high powered effort if there isn’t a positive outcome? That leads me to agree with the quote and how straight forward the message is. For example, if I work extremely hard academically then receive low grades, there was no point in working that hard if the results are far from the goal. Although this is the case in my opinion, I do understand the opposing opinion where someone opposite of me would say you should always put forth a lot of effort even if you don’t achieve the goal. That’s just not the case for me.
Ernest Shackleton was an explorer who was included in four British expeditions. He qualifies for this statement because he was a man who never stopped trying to accomplish his goal. When attempting to achieve one last expedition he ended up dying of a heart attack and was buried at that same place. This shows his characteristics of a heroic figure and how he accomplished superhuman effort. It showed how even when he was dead he wanted a mark left of him at his death spot to prove that his effort never went to waste.
This quote can still be used today because there are millions of people in this world including me who put superhuman effort into things that are cared about most. In my case I put this effort into cheer because a first place trophy at competition is my goal. Whether it’s putting effort into a sport or something you love, it’s a natural feeling to be disappointed in yourself when you don’t reach that goal even though you know you worked hard for it. In Ernest Shackleton’s case an extreme effort is simply worthless if you don’t achieve results.

  41. Superhuman has to do with what is above and beyond what is human. Knowing that, I agree that superhuman efforts are not worth a thing unless it achieves results. I agree that this is true, because why would you want to do something non human like, if you do not achieve results. It would be pointless to attempt superhuman efforts. It would be a waste of time and effort. No matter what you do in life, you always want to achieve results. That’s the main reason why humans do the stuff we do. We attempt a situation to achieve the ending results. This is my opinion on the quote before I research Ernest Shackleton’ past.
Ernest Shackleton was not recognized for his heroic events that he took on. He felt other people were more recognized than he was. Reading about his background changed my mind about superhuman efforts. Superhuman efforts do not have to be beyond what is human. Doing the right thing, could be superhuman efforts. For instance, if you are at war and one of your soldiers gets wounded, but you decide to stop what you are doing to save his life. I feel that is a superhuman effort. In this instance you will receive results whether they are negative or positive. Knowing Shackletons background I do not agree with this quote. I feel as if no matter what the situation is you should also help others even if you do not get results that you want. This is why I believe Shackleton qualifies him to make this statement.
Therefore, I do not agree with this quote after researching Shackletons past. I agreed at first because we should always want a result for whatever we do that is superhuman. Later, after researching I realized I do not agree with this quote. No matter the situation we should want to make superhuman efforts, even if we do not receive the results you want. We might even feel better about ourselves if we contribute superhuman efforts to those who are in need. I do not agree with Shackletons quote.

Yes I do agree with this quote because if you are are working hard to do accomplish something and you do not get results then it is not worth anything. In life you need to achieve something and also get results. For example if you are studying hard for a very important test. Then you take the test and you failed that test. Then why did you study hard for if you still failed that test, that test is worth nothing. Ernest was a man who achieved many things and also got results. That is why he states in his quote that to achieve something you also need to get results. Well, today in our world we need to achieve and get results to accomplish your goals to succeed in life.

I agree with this quote because it doesn’t matter if you have those efforts or give them because it won’t mean anything if you don’t get any results. For instance, if you give all the effort you can it doesn’t matter because you didn’t get any results in return. I think you should only put in the most effort you can so you can get the results that you want.
Ernest Shackleton was an Anglo-Irish explorer where he led three out of four British expeditions to the Antarctic. In his first expedition, him and his companions set a new record by marching to the latitude 82°S. In the second one, he set a new record by reaching the 88°S, which was close to the South Pole and was the largest advance to the Pole in exploration history. He was considered as on the principal figures of the Heroic Age of the Antarctic Exploration. I think he is qualified to say this quote because he put in his “superhuman” effort to explore the Antarctic and he ended up getting results by setting records. He probably said this because he knew that his expeditions would’ve meant nothing if he didn’t achieve the results that he did.
I think I can connect this quote to my life like in cheer because if nobody put in all the effort they could then we wouldn’t get the place we want in competition. I should put my superhuman effort in practices to get better and to be able to stick my stunts and to perfect my jumps. This quote relates to my life in other ways as well. 44. This quote means that if you put out your best effort and in the end don’t get any results is it pointless or worth it? Ernest Shackleton does qualify to say this this because in his journey he launched business ventures, which failed to prosper. I agree if you put effort into something you expect to see results, but at the same time if you put in all your time and effort and don’t see anything you would get discouraged. That doesn’t necessarily mean it was pointless since you didn’t get the results that you wanted or any at all because you never know where it could lead you. If I put all of my time into something and didn’t get any results that wouldn’t keep me from doing it in other things. For example in school if in one of my subjects I did all of the work, turned in every test, and completed all my homework on time, but still ended up with a bad grade I would feel like it was pointless that I made an conscience effort and ended up with negative results. Regardless of how I felt I still think it’s good to always to do your best and put out your best effort.

I think that this is saying that many people create goals or try to do things that are to challenging for them that it isn’t worth for them trying to do it, I think that if there not gonna put any effort or even accomplish what there going for why make such big effort. I agree with this quote because it’s true why try so hard if you’re not gonna accomplish anything.

  55. I believe that Ernest Shackleton, is making us understand that no matter how much you try it doesn’t matter unless you have a result. I think it means that it doesn’t matter how hard you try it matters that you have a result, an answer. I disagree with Ernest Shackleton because what is supposed to matter is effort not result, all that should matter is trying to succeed not technically succeeding. Ernest Shackleton was an Anglo-Irish explorer who participated in four British expeditions to the Antarctic, of which he led three. What qualifies him to say this is that he was an explorer so if he did not make it to where he is going. This quote sounds like my parents, They won’t let me stop unless I’m done. Its sometimes a good thing and sometimes a bad thing. This also sounds like the world, If you had a job to do and one day you didn’t finish your job you would be fired. It resonates today because if you don’t do your job you end up with a problem with your boss, teacher, parents, etc.

  56. I think this quote means that it doesn’t matter how much you try if it doesn’t get any results because all that effort doesn’t really matter if you get nowhere. I go both ways because if something is really challenging and you try your best and you get no results it’s not your fault. If something isn’t that challenging and you’re just slacking off. Shackleton was a man who participated in four British expeditions to the Antarctic. My guess is that Shackleton was trying real hard, but sometimes got no results so he had to use superhuman effort. How this goes with the world is that some people give all their effort and still get no results even with giving superhuman effort. This quote still goes with today because some people claim that they get no results even when they use their superhuman effort. Mr. Shackleton probably was getting no results at some point of his life.

  58. Ernest Shackleton was born on January 15, 1874 and died January 5, 1922. He was born in Kilkea County Kildare, Ireland. His occupation was an explorer. He joined an expedition to the Antarctic but sadly was sent home early because of bad health. Ernest was apart of 10 children and was the oldest. He was raised in London, where his parents moved them. His father wanted him to continue in his footsteps and go into medical school, but at the age of 16 he joined the merchant navy. He received the rank of first mate by the time he was 18. Six years later he was certified master mariner.

Ernest made the quote, “Superhuman effort isn’t worth a damn unless it achieve results,” in 1916. When I read this I thought about superheros. Superheros have these strengths that no one else has. They either use it for the good of mankind or they take advantage of it and go for the worse. Unfortunately, we don’t live in a world where people have those kinds of strengths. I feel as if he’s talking to the people in this world who are able to achieve so much; to those who have everything in life to become something big or do big, but instead they do the same as to those who work harder but get nowhere. He says that those who have these abilities bigger than others, they don’t mean anything unless it creates results, and to be completely honest I agree with that. I might be wrong but that’s what I feel as if he’s trying to infer. I feel that those people with billions of money who don’t even give the effort to even try be as hard working as to those in the real world trying to make a decent amount of money to provide for their family or even for themselves. Others in this world give money to record every second of their lives. Instead of working hard and actually deserve the money that’s handed to them. I do feel as if he does qualify to say this because he did work hard. He was a 16 year old boy in the navy, traveling over seas, he did something with his life and worked hard for it. All that he earned was because of all the hard work he did. From the quote he made I feel as if it’s a text to world. He’s not just speaking to 1 certain person he’s talking about those who don’t work hard or to those who do but both don’t go anywhere.

  59. This quote by Ernest Shackleton i don’t agree with. I think it means that when we try to do something and you really TRY to do it but fail then, it doesn't matter. I personally think that when we are doing something then we should give our best because our hard work pays off. If you walk around half doing something, but saying that you are trying so hard, you won’t be rewarded for what you half do. Mr. Shackleton was a hardworking man. He started off as a Merchant Navy Officer at the age of 16. He did a lot of expeditions and i think that he made this quote because that's maybe what they taught him because they wanted them to succeed, otherwise why do it. Therefore i think that people shouldn't use this quote in their life because i feel like it would make people feel bad about failing. Its okay to fail because you learn from your mistakes. I disagree with this quote because I think that if you try something over and over eventually you will learn something, even if you don’t get the results you wanted. Ernest Shackleton was an Anglo-Irish explorer who participated in 4 British expeditions to the Antarctic, he led 3 of those expeditions. He and his partners set a new southern record by marching latitude 82 S. I think that what qualifies him to make this statement is that he achieved something in which he probably had to try a lot to be able to achieve it. The sentiment of the quote still resonates today because if somebody is trying over and over to make a living out of something they like, but can’t, then all that effort was a waste because they didn’t achieve anything.

  61. I think this quote means that superhuman effort does not matter at all if you get no where . Sometimes people say that it’s the effort that counts , but what’s the point if it does you no good . You can put as many hours , tears , and sweat into something and still get literally no where and that sucks . Results can be as simple as a little change in your life and at least that counts for something . Even if you achieve very little it’s better than nothing and in that case superhuman effort is worth your time . I agree with this quote because i have no intention of putting in effort and ending up with nothing , it’s a waste of time on my part. Ernest Shackleton was an Anglo-Irish explorer who participated in and led 3 different expeditions to the Antarctic . Him and his crew set many latitude records and climbed the most active volcano in the Antarctic . Therefore , he has put much effort into his adventures and if it hadn’t got him any where it would’ve been pointless , but his voyages brought him much fame and fortune . This quote resonates today because when young kids have dreams and strive for greatness they must put in much effort and if that effort were to take them nowhere no kid would even begin to try .

I believe that this quote is stating that no matter how hard you try it doesn’t mean a thing, if it does not gain any results. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, because getting results does not always have to be success or positive, it can be failure or negative results.
I disagree with this quote because it can discourage others. It can discourage others by influencing them to believe that if there are no results then all their hard work and efforts were for nothing. For example, a scientist is conducting an experiment on plant life. And he experiments a lot, but doesn’t receive any results; he would be led to believe that all his time and efforts were a waste. This could discourage him and he might be afraid or not willing to try new things.
Ernest Shackleton was an Anglo-Irish explorer who went on four expeditions to the Antarctic, but led three of them. In these expeditions, Shackleton, Scott, and Wilson set records traveling further and further south. They have also climbed Mount Erebus. Besides his great expeditions he had a busy and unfinished life. He tried to create business ventures to gain wealth but failed. He died of a heart attack in South Georgia; and died well in debt.
Ernest Shackleton is allowed to make this statement because, in his case, not getting any results was a waste of his time and effort. In other words, if he came back with no results, then there was no significance of his expeditions, so it wouldn’t have made a difference whether he went or not.

  69. What this quote is saying that a man can work hard his whole life, but without a plan and without results it isn't worth a damn. I agree with the quote, and I don’t want to discount hard work or say that doing your best isn't important with the absence of measurable results.

Our society measures worth solely on results and success. Many people are willing to put in a hard days work and many have a plan, but it is primarily only those that can put both together that can achieve success. For example, if a man had a plan and in the same time he is working very hard to achieve his goals in a successful path. People shouldn't work very hard for their entire life and have no plan for tomorrow because what if that person lost his/her hard job because of some reasons. However, if a person had a plan to achieve after losing their hard job then they can still follow their other plan.

Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton, CVO, OBE was an Anglo-Irish merchant naval officer who made his reputation as an explorer during what is known as the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration, a period of discovery characterized by journeys of geographical and scientific exploration in a largely unknown continent, without any of the benefits of modern travel methods or radio communication.
According to his life, he was in an army where he have to fight very hard and when he tried to fight very hard and he lost he realized that his hard work about fighting was worthless. This also relate to my life because sometimes I study very hard for the test but then I don’t get the score that I want it. I agree with this quote because what would be the point of putting all the that hard work and determination just for nothing to come out of it. Ernest Shackleton is qualified to say this because he went on his third trip to the Antarctica with the ship “Endurance”. Early in 1915 they got trapped in ice, ten months later the ship sank. Shackleton’s team luckily were already living on floating ice. In April 1916 they set of three small boats that made it to elephant island. Shackleton went on to find help with other 5 crew members. In a small boat the men spent so much time, but no one got found, everyone of the “expedition” was dead. Later on Shackleton died of a heart attack. 72. First of all, it means like the person’s power means nothing unless he tries to achieve his goals. They cannot be considered an individual with power until they show effort because someone cannot just go through life with maximum effort and nothing to show for it. Each person needs to find a way to achieve results. I do agree with this quote because nowadays people tend to show that they are so powerful and they can achieve whatever they wish so easily, but in reality they can’t prove any of this unless they put effort and reach to results that will prove they are superhuman. Ernest Shackleton was born on February 15, 1874 in County Kildare, Ireland. 73. Ernest Shackleton was an Anglo-Irish exploration who participated in four british expeditions which he led three of them. As an a explorer Ernest has been exposed to many things through his explorations and realized that “Superhuman effort isn’t worth a damn unless it achieves results”. He is qualified to say this quote because he wasted so much time on the expectations that he felt that if he didn't bring back anything he would feel a less of a person. Nobody wants to go on a expedition for no reason to just be glorified by his effort. nobody wants to go down on history as a person who tried but didn't accomplish anything successfully . I think Ernest means that if you try your hardest and don’t get a reward from it , it will never mean anything but a waste of time . For example he means like a great athlete that always trains every living second he has but never achieves the glory he deserves. Ernest Shackleton brings up a good point because in our society , we honor people who give a trying effort as well the champions so there's not even a difference between the two.
In our society anything means a lot , look at people who get fourth place in a competition they still get honored the same as the people who got 1st , 2nd, 3nd. I agree with Ernest because it should be a waste of time if you don’t accomplish anything with the hard work because you wasted your time. If your gonna waste your time on something you should try to accomplish anything because that will motivate you into keep trying and thriving. This quote connects with me because it demonstrates how people always want something in return in order to feel like a somebody. That just a natural feeling by people because people want to be admired instead of just being treated like an average Joe. This quote connects to the world because in order to be a “somebody in this world you need to achieve something , also it makes you prove what kind of person you really are . The sentiment of this quote is really large because people tend to use this quote a lot only due to the fact to inspire or motivate people to always thrive to their best.

  74. I think that Ernest Shackleton is saying that if we’re going to try to do something and we don’t get the result we needed or wanted, then the effort went to waste. I disagree with this quote because whatever you do, you should always give it your best, no matter the outcome. Positive outcomes are always great but I believe that negative outcomes can make you and help you grow as a person. If you fail something, you should keep trying, don’t instantly give up. Giving up will get you nowhere. Everything in life won’t always give you the result you want. Ernest Shackleton was an Anglo-Irish explorer who participated in four British expeditions to the Antarctic and led three of them. What qualified Shackleton to state his statement, was that he was an explorer who failed, but gave it everything he could. I think what made Shackleton say what he said was out of disappointment, he did participate in not only one, but four expeditions. Like any other person, you would expect something if you put as much time and effort as Shackleton did, but all he got was failure. Though, failure isn’t always a bad thing, Shackleton later became a “role model.” This connects to me because sometimes I try things I’m naturally not good at and fail, so I think everything I put in to it was for nothing, but I have learned to accept my mistakes and move on.

  76. I think it means if a person would put effort in what they want to be achieving there is no reason to not achieve it. When a person put a lot of time and effort into something they are willing to achieve it won’t be that valuable and meaningful if they don’t achieve it. It would be waste of time to not achieve what a person want when they put effort what they want to achieve. Wanting to put effort is working hard putting more time into what they want to achieve.
I agree with putting effort into what a person would want to achieve it makes a person to be proud of themselves. For example, my friend worked really hard, she did a lot of extra work she took an initiative her goal was to be a valedictorian
when she graduated and she did it. She set her goal since she was a freshmen in high school. Each person can set a goal and achieve it throw the hard work and effort.

  77. When looking at this quote, I think it means how superhuman could be anything that a regular human couldn’t even do. So when superhuman effort is given it, may not always work. It wouldn’t even matter with all that effort if the outcome of it wasn’t even worth it. Achievements happen with hard work, so with work would come with responsibility. Taking that responsibility could either get you to that achievement that you wanted, then with that superhuman effort that could get you in the the wrong direction of that achievement. I agree with this quote because with superhuman effort that was given could not always work in the end of what you actually wanted. And I think that it would all depend on how hard you actually work for it. Ernest Shackleton was a british explorer who in 1901 joined an expedition to the Antarctic. Which he was sent home due to bad health. How he ties in with this quote is how he had many goals that he wanted to achieve. And some of those goals he couldn’t complete due to some complications that he had. But that never stopped him once. Shackleton is an example of how some people should look at how he never once said that he couldn’t or even you can’t because of some things that could stop you in life. So I think that even though there could be superhuman effort that could be put into something, that might not always be the case. When connecting this quote to my life, I could see how I could use this. When growing up, it does take a lot of effort and there are things that I would want to actually accomplish in life. And what you actually have to put all of your effort, not just some percent of it. Like if you want to have a house or a job that takes a lot of effort and if you don’t try its not going to mean anything in the end. How you take that responsibility, doing all the work even if it would include doing simple homework. With all that simple work it would get you to get that diploma and then working more hard and getting that job or house you wanted. And this quote would still mean something today because everyone has to work, but with that work comes with responsibility and depending on you, you could either take that as an advantage in life or some waste of time that wouldn’t even matter in the future for you.

    Superhuman
“Superhuman effort isn't worth a damn unless it achieves results.”

    —Ernest Shackleton, 1916

Respond to the quote above. What do you think it means? Do you agree or disagree and why? Who was Ernest Shackleton- what qualifies him to make this statement?
Also, connect with the quote (text to self, text to text, or text to world)- how does the sentiment of the quote still resonate today?
I think he’s trying to say that even if you try your best, if you don’t succeed, it doesn’t mean anything. Everyone says that all that matters is if you tried, but I disagree. I actually agree with the quote. Let’s say that you want to become a musician, but you try and nothing’s working out. There’s no point in that. Just trying and failing doesn’t get you famous and it doesn’t get you anywhere. Well, if it’s something like sports, then if you try and you’re not good at it even though you’ve been playing for years, then maybe it’s not your sport. That doesn’t mean you failed though. I guess in different situations it’s different.
Ernest Shackleton was an explorer from the early 1900s. During his second expedition, his ship got caught in a pack of ice and they were trapped there. They survived by living on the pack of ice until it disintegrated. After that, they got lifeboats and used them to sail to their destination. He later became ill and could not participate in a later expedition. He died of a heart attack later. I think he based this quote on what he couldn’t accomplish because of his illness.

I think that it depends on what the scenario is. It still resonates today, but it depends on the situation. For example, in gym, we have participation grades for trying. Which counts as our grade. So, if you try, you can’t fail. But if you’re applying for jobs and you keep trying and failing, I don’t think that’s a good thing. You need to be able to succeed. For example, there are singers that are famous and there are singers that are not famous. The famous singers have something that the other ones that aren’t famous don’t. They have interesting concepts that pull people in. Like a hook for a story or essay that people write. It’s different. Sometimes, even if you try, to succeed is hard.

  79. I think that it depends on the situation. If you try and you're not good at something, that doesn't necessarily mean, you're a failure, it means that you need to keep on trying it. Like, tennis, at first, you don't really understand how to get control of the ball. It took me a month. But if you keep trying, you'll get better. But for stuff like the music business, if you try for ten years, it's time to stop and move on. There's a difference from trying to pursue your dream and clinging onto to something that will never happen.

  81. .The quote means that being the most powerful does not mean anything unless you can do something great with it.i definitely agree because lets say you are the strongest person in the world or an athlete it doesn't matter what your label is and it doesn't mean much unless you do something great with it.Ernest shackleton had the right to say this because he was an explorer and without his superhuman effort he probably wouldn’t explore around the world.

  82. If you were to be superhuman, then wouldn’t you be able to have powers beyond your limits? Well if you consider yourself to be superhuman, then you must have some type of power that makes you a human that has powers beyond any other persons limits. The quote by Ernest Shackleton means that if you were to be have some sort of superhuman powers that no one else were to have, and its not used for any good, then its not worth having those superhuman powers. I can argue both ways about this quote. I can agree because if you were to have some sort of superhuman powers, then its not worth having to keep it if it is not being used for anything/any good. I can also disagree because if I were to have some type of superhuman powers, then I would keep it and used it some type of way later in life. If someone were to have superhuman powers, and is used for the bad or evil, then they should not be having the powers in the first place. Even though it is their decision on what to do with their powers, but most of us would use it for the good. Ernest Shackleton was a British Explorer. He was known for his Antarctic Expedition. His ship was crushed by ice, meaning that they were in the middle of no where. Mr. Shackleton and his crew were on ice floating for some while, months. They eventually reached an Island called Elephant Island. Eventually, he got all of his crew members to safety and not a single person died. This qualifies him to make this quote because the time of this quote was around the same time that all of his crew and him were to safety. This qualifies him to make this quote because he did use all of his powers to get his crew members to safety, and that's what he did. He did everything in his powers to get his whole crew to safety. This quote by Ernest Shackleton can be connected to the world because of other situations that can happened that can be related to the quote and to Mr. Shackleton journey through the Antarctic Expedition. In a real life situation, and you need to do the right thing in that situation. This situation could be about saving someone ones life or your life. It is to use your superhuman efforts that will impact your life in a good way. This can save your life in the long run, not just yours, but someone elses.
